Gemini Can Make Calls for You on Pixel Phones

Google has given its Gemini assistant a new ability on Pixel phones: making calls on a user's behalf. The feature, called Call for Me, is exclusive to the Pixel 11 series and turns the AI assistant into a kind of autonomous phone agent. Instead of placing a call yourself, you can ask Gemini to ring a restaurant, salon, clinic, or other business to make a reservation, schedule an appointment, or ask a simple question. The assistant speaks in a natural voice, navigates the conversation, and reports back with the result. That makes Call for Me a notable step in agentic AI. Until now, many AI assistants have been limited to drafting messages, summarizing information, or operating inside apps. Call for Me points toward software that can act in the real world, interacting with people and services that were not designed for bots. For users, the appeal is obvious: tedious calls can be delegated, and people with limited time, anxiety about phone calls, or accessibility needs may find the feature especially useful. But the feature also raises serious privacy and consent questions. The person on the other end of the line may not know they are speaking with an AI rather than a human. They might share information, offer options, or agree to terms under a false impression about who is listening. Businesses may also have policies about recording or automated calls, and those rules may not be equipped for a world where AI assistants routinely place them. Call for Me gives robocalls a new meaning: not mass-market spam, but personalized, task-driven automation. If the technology spreads beyond Pixel devices, regulators, businesses, and consumers will have to decide how transparent AI callers must be and what limits should apply. Google's Pixel 11 launch may be remembered less for the hardware than for showing how quickly agentic AI is moving from demo to daily life.
