Anthropic’s cloud deals get messy before IPO
Anthropic is reportedly facing difficulty securing enough cloud compute ahead of a planned November IPO, according to TechCrunch, as providers that supply infrastructure increasingly also compete with the company. The tension is becoming a defining problem for AI model labs: training and inference require enormous, predictable access to chips and data centers, but the hyperscalers that own much of that capacity are building their own models and products. For Anthropic, constrained compute could slow model development, limit customer capacity, and complicate growth plans. It may also affect margins if the company must pay more or sign less flexible contracts to secure capacity. The report points to a broader structural issue in the AI industry. Model developers depend on cloud partners, yet those partners have strategic incentives to favor their own AI businesses. That can make long-term compute deals harder to negotiate and increase the risk of shortages during peak demand. Ahead of an IPO, investors will likely focus on whether Anthropic has durable infrastructure agreements, diversified suppliers, and a credible path to scale without becoming overly dependent on rivals. The company’s infrastructure spending is already ballooning, adding pressure to prove that revenue and usage can justify the cost. The situation does not necessarily mean Anthropic lacks options, but it highlights how compute access has become a competitive weapon. In the AI race, access to capacity may matter as much as model quality.
