OpenAI Brings Hands-Free Voice Control to Codex

OpenAI has taken a significant step toward more natural human-AI interaction by integrating full-duplex voice control into Codex and the ChatGPT desktop application. The feature, powered by GPT-Live, allows developers to control coding workflows entirely hands-free, using voice commands while simultaneously listening to AI responses. This is not a simple push-to-talk feature. Full-duplex means that both the user and the AI can speak and listen at the same time, enabling a conversational flow that more closely resembles human dialogue. For developers, this translates into a new way of interacting with code: you can describe a bug, hear the AI suggest a fix, and ask follow-up questions without pausing or pressing a button. The feature is currently available on macOS and Windows versions of the ChatGPT desktop app, as well as within Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding assistant. Early users report that the hands-free capability is particularly useful during debugging sessions, code reviews, and when multitasking across multiple monitors. OpenAI has also optimized the voice model for technical vocabulary. The system accurately recognizes programming terms, function names, and syntax references, reducing the need for manual corrections.
