Meta’s Muse Outpaces ChatGPT’s Early Mobile Launch

Meta's new AI agent, Muse, is off to a stronger start on mobile than ChatGPT had in its early days, according to estimates from Appfigures. The data suggests Muse has drawn more downloads and daily active users in the U.S. and Canada than ChatGPT did during a comparable period after its mobile debut. That is notable because ChatGPT is widely credited with popularizing generative AI chatbots for mainstream consumers. The early lead appears to be tied to distribution. Meta can promote Muse across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, giving it an enormous built-in audience. Instead of asking users to discover a separate AI app, Meta can place its assistant directly into products people already open every day. That lowers friction and may accelerate adoption in ways a standalone chatbot cannot easily match. Muse is positioned as a consumer AI assistant that competes directly with ChatGPT and other chatbots. Its early momentum suggests that the next phase of the AI app race may depend less on raw model quality alone and more on packaging, distribution, and integration into existing habits. For Meta, the payoff could be a durable assistant that becomes a default way to search, create, plan, and communicate. Still, early mobile numbers are not a final verdict. ChatGPT had a first-mover advantage and a strong brand, and it continues to evolve. Appfigures estimates are also just estimates, not audited figures. Retention, monetization, and long-term usefulness will matter more than initial downloads. But if Muse maintains its pace, it could become a serious challenger and show how powerful Meta's social platforms are as an AI launchpad.
