ChatGPT Work Adds a Data Agent for Enterprise Insights
OpenAI has introduced a Data agent within ChatGPT Work, a feature that lets users connect company data, uncover insights, and build interactive dashboards using natural language. The tool is aimed squarely at enterprise analytics, where business users often depend on data teams for even routine reporting.
By lowering the barrier to querying internal data, OpenAI is competing directly with business intelligence and analytics vendors. Instead of waiting for a data analyst to write a query or build a report, a marketing manager or operations lead could ask questions in plain language and receive charts, summaries, and dashboards in response. That shift could speed up decision-making and reduce the backlog that many data teams face.
The move also raises governance questions. When a general-purpose assistant connects to company data, access control, data residency, and auditability become critical concerns. Enterprises will want to know who can query what, where data is processed, and how outputs are logged. OpenAI will need to address these issues convincingly if the Data agent is to be adopted in regulated industries.
ChatGPT Work's Data agent fits into a broader pattern of AI vendors pushing deeper into enterprise workflows. Productivity features are useful, but analytics touches core business processes and budgets, making it a more strategic battleground. If OpenAI can combine natural-language ease of use with the security and controls enterprises require, it could reshape how companies interact with their own data, turning dashboards from static artifacts into conversational tools.
