Nvidia Invests $4B in Photonics for AI Infrastructure
NVIDIA is placing a $4 billion bet on the future of data center connectivity, investing $2 billion each in photonics companies Lumentum and Coherent. This strategic move targets the underlying technology that uses light, rather than electricity, to transmit data—a critical innovation for the next generation of AI infrastructure.
The investment focuses on key photonics components like optical transceivers, circuit switches, and lasers. These technologies are essential for moving massive datasets at incredible speeds across longer distances within and between data centers with far lower power consumption and heat generation compared to traditional copper-based electrical connections.
As AI models grow exponentially in size and complexity, the bandwidth and latency demands on data center networks are becoming a major bottleneck. Photonics promises to break through these limitations, enabling the kind of seamless, high-speed communication required for sprawling AI supercomputers. NVIDIA'
