Google Gemini Now Allows Users to Turn Off Visible Watermarks
Google has introduced a significant update to its Gemini platform and its AI video generator, Flow, giving users the ability to remove visible watermarks from AI-generated content. The new 'Media watermark' setting, which can be toggled off, removes the 'sparkle' watermark that was previously embedded in images, videos, and music created through these tools.
This change marks a shift toward greater user control over AI-generated media. For creators and businesses, the ability to produce clean, watermark-free content can streamline workflows and improve the aesthetic quality of their outputs. It also removes a visual cue that some users found distracting or unprofessional in final deliverables.
However, the update raises important questions about content provenance and authenticity. Watermarks have served as a simple way to identify AI-generated material, helping to prevent misinformation and clarify the origin of digital assets. With the option to remove them, the line between human-created and AI-generated content becomes less transparent. This could potentially enable misuse, such as creating deceptive media that is harder to trace back to an AI source.
Google has not yet announced any alternative provenance measures, such as invisible metadata or cryptographic signing, to accompany this new flexibility. As AI tools become more powerful and integrated into everyday content creation, the balance between user convenience and responsible disclosure will remain a critical discussion. For now, users have more freedom than ever before, but with that freedom comes a shared responsibility to use AI-generated content ethically.
