AI Was Everywhere at GDC, But Not in Playable Games

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) was awash with promises of an AI-powered future, but the present reality lagged behind. Vendors heavily promoted tools for generating NPC dialogue, creating art assets, and even prototyping entire games using AI. Yet, these features were predominantly confined to vendor booths and sales pitches. On the show floor, among the actual playable game demos, integrated AI-generated content was notably scarce. This gap between promotional hype and practical implementation highlights the nascent state of generative AI in game development. While the potential is widely recognized, developers are still grappling with issues of quality control, artistic direction, workflow integration, and the technical challenge of making AI outputs truly playable and fun.
